Under general supervision, develops art classes and instructs children at the County Community Centers, and does related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An employee in this position is assigned to work with children at the eight (8) County Community Centers. An employee in this class performs a full range of duties involved in instructing, supervising and leading children in a classroom setting. An employee shall develop, plan, coordinate and direct art lessons for school-aged youth. This position is 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday for the Summer Youth Enrichment Program and/or for a year-rounded after-school art program.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Develops, schedules, leads activities and instructs school-aged youth at the County Community Centers for the Summer Youth Enrichment Program and/or for a year-round after-school art program.
Leads and instructs youth in activities relating to art such as painting, sculpture, drawing, fabric art, mask-making and other art techniques that are fun and entertaining for youth.
Provides specialized, individual art instruction to children who show an interest in developing their art skills beyond the scope of general instruction provided at the regular art instruction classes.
Provides “Train the Trainers” art instruction to County Community Center staff and other adults who provide instruction to children.
Provides outreach services to involve art galleries, community-based organizations, public agencies and schools to increase awareness and display the artwork created by children in the art instruction classes.
Provides other art services to help create, enhance and promote the artwork of children at the County Community Centers.
Operate the programs described above at 30 hours per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Possession of an AA degree or its equivalent from an accredited college with a major in art or related field.
OR
Experience: Two years instructing students or adults in a wide variety of art subjects.
AND
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE
Art activities and methods of teaching children and adults; curriculum preparation; techniques in painting, sculpture, drawing, fabric art, clay, mask-making and other art activities.
ABILITY
Develop art activities for school-age children; instruct, schedule and direct art activities; inspire enthusiasm and interest in program activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, art galleries, community-based organizations and public agencies; maintain accurate records of work performed.
