Introduction

This examination is being given to fill one (1) vacancy in the Public Health Services Department. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an application. A completed application must be postmarked or received online by the final filing deadline.

Pre-Employment Drug Screening and Background:  Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and a background investigation as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible has passed the drug screen and successfully completed the background process.  The County pays for the initial drug screen.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Learns to collect, clean, sterilize, inspect, prepare, wrap, and distribute glassware, instruments, and other laboratory supplies.
  • Receives specimens for testing and matches specimens with test request forms.
  • Operates and maintains autoclave, ovens, glassware washer, and other equipment.
  • Fills and labels media reagent containers and kits for specimen collection for distribution to private physicians, clinics, laboratories, and hospitals.
  • Prepares, dispenses, and sterilizes a large variety of media and reagents for use in various sections of the laboratory.
  • Records and documents daily laboratory measurements for review.
  • Maintains the laboratory in a sanitary and orderly condition.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies, materials, and appropriate records; delivers supplies to clients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

License:  Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic knowledge of biology, chemistry and mathematics; record keeping principles and techniques; laboratory hazards; proper safety precautions and procedures; basic computer and computer software relevant to department operations.

ABILITY

Learn basic laboratory procedures; learn scientific terminology and measurements; clean and care for laboratory equipment; follow oral and written directions; utilize standard office procedures and equipment; operate computers and related software; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility-Operating data entry device, standing for long periods, walking; occasional sitting for long periods, pushing/pulling, bending/squatting, driving, climbing stairs; Lifting-Frequent lifting 5 pounds or less; occasional lifting 5 to 30 pounds; Vision-Frequent overall vision, eye/hand coordination, reading/close-up work, field of vision/peripheral; color perception, depth perception; Dexterity-Frequent reaching, grasping, repetitive motion, writing; holding; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing normal speech; frequent hearing on the telephone, talking in person, talking on the telephone; occasional hearing faint sounds; Emotional/Psychological-Concentration, working alone; frequent public contact, travel; occasional exposure to trauma, grief, death, exposure to hazardous materials; Special Requirements-Working alone; overtime; Environmental Conditions-Frequent exposure to noise; occasional exposure to dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, poor ventilation, cold, heat (indoor), hazardous materials.

Selection Procedures

Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam:  Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen.  The County pays for the initial drug screen.

 

Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

  • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

  • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.

Proof of Eligibility:  If you are offered a job, you will be required to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or other documents that establish your eligibility to be employed in the U.S.
