The General Services Department assists County departments in achieving their public service missions by providing essential support services in the areas of capital projects management, fleet services, facilities operations, purchasing, and real estate services. 

Grounds Maintenance uses the latest Technology and Green practices to maintain the 113 acres of Administration Grounds for Probation, Health and Social Services, Juvenile Hall, Court Buildings and Property Management landscape and non-landscaped areas in the County. 

The Position

The General Services department is currently recruiting for a Groundskeeper to perform a variety of grounds maintenance tasks around County building complexes and maintaining associated maintenance equipment.

Although the current vacancy is for Extra Help, the eligible list created as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill part-time and full-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur.

Extra Help employees cannot work more than 999 hours in a fiscal year. Extra help employees are excluded from civil service and shall not have the rights to regular or continued employment. An employee appointed to an extra help must meet all the requirements of the corresponding regular position. An extra help employee is a person who is employed for the purpose of relieving or augmenting regular staff in the accomplishment of work and to assist with workload during peak growing season and to provide coverage when permanent staff are on leave or unavailable due to unscheduled time-off.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education and/or Experience:   Any combination of education, training or experience which demonstrates possession of and competency in requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.    An applicator's certificate is desirable. 

Independent travel is required.   Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License is required.  

Incumbents must be able to perform manual labor associated with groundskeeping tasks; work outdoors in all types of weather, perform work which may include lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds; will work with hazardous chemicals including herbicides and insecticides.    

BENEFITS

Solano County offers a comprehensive benefit package to full and part-time employee which includes a cafeteria-style medical package with health benefits, offered through CalPERS. Medical insurance is effective the first of the month following date of hire. The County contribution for family coverage for the 2014 calendar year is $1,448.30 per month. If the medical plan costs are less than $1,448.30 per month, employees will receive the difference as taxable earnings to a maximum of $334.58.

The County offers a cash back provision for those who choose employee-only or who waive medical insurance coverage. Dental and vision insurances for the employee and eligible dependents are paid 100% by the County. Solano County participates in CalPERS retirement and contributes to Social Security. Vacation is accrued at approximately 10 days per year for the first 78 full-time pay periods (approximately 3 years). Sick leave accrues at approximately 12 days per year. Employees are eligible to receive an additional 2.5% longevity pay, per level, after the completion of continuous service at 10, 20, 25, and 30 years.

Extra-help employees do not receive or accrue benefits of regular employees during their period of employment.

Selection Process

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants will be invited for further examination. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process will consist of an initial application screening and a practical exam. Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible, applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions.  A copy of the DD214, showing discharge type, must be received in the Human Resources Department by the final filing date. Applicants who have a service connected disability must submit a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service connected reasons.  Disability must be rated at least 10% to be eligible for disabled veteran's points.  Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general under honorable conditions shall have five (5) points added to their combined score.  Disabled veterans shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score.  Veteran preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
