Introduction

This is entry level inventory and stores work.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing basic manual storekeeping and inventory activities such as pulling items to fill orders and restocking shelves when orders are received. Employees also learn how to prepare necessary forms and perform data entry on the inventory control system. Assignments are of routine difficulty and might include the operation of a lightweight motor vehicle to deliver materials. Work requires the exercise of limited initiative and independent judgement in placing items into proper bins or appropriate storage areas. Employees work under immediate supervision receiving instructions both orally and in writing. Work is reviewed through observation while in progress and upon completion.

Examples of Duties

Issues various automotive, construction, maintenance, office or other supplies, materials, tools, and equipment; loads and unloads materials; drives a motor vehicle to deliver supplies and equipment. Receives various items into stock area; compares items received against delivery invoices; matches contract prices with delivery prices; verifies both quality and quantity of items received. Marks or tags all items received into inventory; places items into proper bin or storage area in accordance with established stock rotation procedures; maintains orderliness of storage areas; assists in rearranging storage areas to accommodate changes in inventoried items. Receives, records, and fills stock transfers to and from sub-stations; receives list of items to be removed from inventory because of low usage or obsolescence and pulls items, under direction, for return to vendor. Participates in inventory spot checks; maintains simple records. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Some knowledge of: standard methods, practices and procedures employed in the storage of inventory items; record keeping and office practices.

Ability to: perform basic mathematical computations; understand and follow oral and written instructions, and maintain simple records; perform work requiring physical exertion; operate a motor vehicle skillfully and safely; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to learn: assigned inventory and storekeeping tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and six (6) months experience in storekeeping activities or warehouse operations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required; a valid commercial drivers license may be required.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
