This is responsible, technical stores and inventory work. Bargaining unit position

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for manual and clerical storekeeping assignments of more than average difficulty in a stockroom or related storage area. Some positions, under general supervision, entail lead responsibilities over inventory technicians and couriers; others, under less supervision, involve working independently in a storage area. The employees in this class are held responsible for inventories during their tours of duty. Responsibilities also include analyzing, developing, and recommending strategies to improve inventory control processes for the assigned operation. Employees must exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgement in overseeing and/or performing work assignments. Tact and courtesy are required in contacts with vendors, the general public, department representatives, and other employees. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Oversees and/or performs activities involving the receipt, verification, inventory, issuance, and delivery of various supplies, parts, materials, instruments, tools, and equipment; maintains inventories and requisitions materials as needed; directs the return of defective or incorrect items and the disposal, repair or replacement of depreciated, worn, damaged, or obsolete stock.

Edits inventory reports making adjustments and/or corrections as necessary; requisitions items that fall below minimum quantity levels; contacts vendors for availability, price quotations, terms, delivery, and discounts on stock items; keeps inventory control files; performs clerical and office work in support of storekeeping functions; maintains records, logs, and ledgers related to area of work.

When assigned as lead worker: trains lower level inventory personnel; oversees work activities.

Uses the City’s bid processes on purchases and services not covered by contracts. 

Operates a lightweight motor vehicle as required to pick up and deliver materials; loads and unloads items from truck, including supplies, equipment, and materials utilizing forklift, platform truck, etc., as required.

Is responsible for Maintenance/Operation and Engineering vehicle inventory, including verifying inspections and repairs.

Analyzes, develops, and recommends projects to improve inventory control process; develops and recommends strategies to acquire items to meet specific needs including special ordering, bulk purchasing, special shipping techniques, and standardization of items. Will seek best pricing and availability on requested items.

Utilizes computer system to submit requisitions and retrieve such information as account balances and inventory levels; operates computer, calculator, or adding machine to check/ verify arithmetic calculations; operates security system; operates sign making machine to cut vinyl for header signs and informational signs.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: standard methods, practices and procedures employed in the acquisition of inventory items; inventory maintenance and control.

Working knowledge of: purchasing and requisitioning practices and procedures; records keeping as employed in an inventory operation; freight rates, shipping techniques, and special ordering procedures; municipal purchasing laws, regulations, and procedures.

Ability to: analyze data and draw sound conclusions; formulate and present recommendations; prepare and present oral and written reports; establish and maintain records keeping and inventory systems; perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy; conduct inventories; perform work requiring physical exertion; understand and follow oral and written instructions; operate motor vehicles and other machines skillfully and safely; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 60 lbs., mostly standing and a combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and three (3) years of storekeeping, warehousing, or purchasing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required; a valid commercial driver's license may be required.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
