Introduction

This is general office and entry level clerical work.   Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of routine general office clerical tasks including maintenance of file systems, logs and records; typing, and compiling information to assist in the efficient accomplishment of support activities and/or other related municipal services. Tasks, which are of routine difficulty, are learned through on-the-job training requiring exercise of only limited initiative and independent judgment.  Some positions might require employees to work part-time.  Under immediate supervision, employees receive instructions orally with work being reviewed while in progress and upon completion through continuous observation and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Performs light keyboarding to complete various forms, documents and other material; enters data in various computer systems; maintains basic manual and automated file systems; performs other clerical duties such as photocopying; scanning; sending, receiving, sorting, and distributing mail.  

Prepares files for microfilming and storage; scans, seals, and files documents.  

Reviews forms, documents and other materials for accuracy and completeness.  

Provides assistance to staff and public as required.  

Operates office equipment such as adding machines, copiers, telephones, shredders, and postage meters.

Performs basic operations on data processing equipment.  

Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Some knowledge of: general office practices and procedures; English grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Ability to:  perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, answering the phone; maintain files and records; to follow oral and written instructions; to use general office equipment; a personal computer and related software.

Ability and skill in: operation and minor maintenance of office equipment and machinery; typing and using a computer.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED Certificate; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
