Introduction

This is semi-skilled and manual work involving care and maintenance of municipal trees.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for participating in semi-skilled and manual tasks of a hazardous nature involving care and maintenance of municipal trees. Under immediate supervision, employee performs assignments, which are of average difficulty requiring exercise of only limited initiative and independent judgment. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Participates in care and maintenance of municipal trees; picks up debris; climbs trees and removes dead, broken and undesired branches; performs manual labor as required; uses hand tools such as pruning shears, power saws, and similar equipment in trimming trees for needed clearance; removes trash and debris from ditches and ponds; removes silt from boat ramps to improve access.

Loads and unloads heavy items, including supplies, equipment and materials manually in order to complete assigned duties.

Backfills, sods, and seeds behind newly constructed curbs at construction sites; applies fertilizer and insecticide on city property to complete assigned duties; uses map to locate streets and addresses of assignments; drives to job sites, as required.

Checks assigned vehicle and equipment to ensure that it will be ready for daily operation; maintains familiarization with the operation and maintenance of an aerial lift.

Installs construction signs and barricades to re-route traffic; uses flags to direct traffic through construction zones for traffic control; installs temporary markings to maintain and support traffic control or construction work zones.

Prepares time reports and forwards them to supervisor for review and approval to ensure proper documentation and payroll processing.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Some knowledge of: forestry, especially tree trimming methods, techniques, and equipment; municipal street locations; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Ability to: understand and follow oral and written instructions; climb and work at heights; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; operate a motor vehicle or forklift.

Skill in: use and care of tools and equipment utilized in tree climbing and trimming.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 40-60 lbs., mostly standing and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of High School and six (6) months of experience in general or semi-skilled labor; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Commercial driver’s license, Class "B" with Air Brakes. Pesticide application certification is desirable.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
