Performs cashiering tasks for municipal parking garages: calculates payment due based upon entry time recorded on ticket, exit time, and rate schedule; receives payments for use of facilities; records time and payment on cash register; counts cash received, deposits in register, calculates and gives appropriate change; at end of shift, counts money from cash register and prepares work sheet recording receipts; researches cash on imbalances by comparing tickets to receipts to locate errors.
Collects money from parking meters: unlocks meters and empties cash into strongbox; sorts and counts money; completes deposit slips and puts money in bags for transport to bank.
Collects money for parking on city property during such outdoor events as football games: receives payments and distributes tickets; directs vehicles to parking spaces to ensure orderly and efficient use of facilities.
Receives on-the-job training for higher level cashier positions; participates in processing varied, complex cash transactions; receives training and participates in the operation of an on-line, computerized cash register; learns and utilizes various codes to apply payments received to appropriate department and consumer accounts through direct data entry on cash register.
Meets the public; directs visitors; answers the telephone; provides non-technical information and explains established, well-defined rules, policies and procedures.
Operates, cleans and performs minor maintenance on various machinery and equipment such as cash registers and ticket dispensers; performs minor maintenance such as sweeping and picking up trash to keep work areas and garages clean.
Operates a typewriter or computer to prepare correspondence or maintain records.
Operates radio or digital paging system as required.
Performs related work as required.
Some knowledge of: the practice and procedures of cashiering.
Skills in: the operation, care and minor maintenance of various machinery and equipment such as cash registers and ticket dispensers.
Ability to: receive cash, record payments, and calculate and give change with speed and accuracy; perform routine mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy; count money with speed and accuracy; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; work outdoors, often in inclement weather, standing for long periods of time.
