Coordinates activities of an assigned recreation area; plans, promotes, conducts, teaches, and oversees play activities, team sports, after school programs, crafts, contests, and other activities; assists participants in use of computer labs; confers with supervisor about organizational administration problems; recruits specialists to conduct activities; confers with parents as necessary; may be required to transport participants in department vehicle or travel between sites.
Performs and oversees a variety of instructional activities at an assigned preschool; teaches reading readiness, math concepts, safety, and personal hygiene; purchases snacks and supplies for participants.
Promotes good public relations in the community; prepares promotional materials such as fliers and posters; assists clubs and civic groups in conducting recreational activities; recommends programs based on needs analysis of the community; interprets departmental policies and rules for the general public.
Oversees lower level recreation personnel; oversees work of custodial personnel; provide input into performance evaluations for lower level staff.
Inspects recreational facilities, apparatus and equipment to ensure safety and cleanliness; performs field maintenance when required; maintains inventory of supplies; submits requisitions for needed repairs and supplies.
Operates audiovisual equipment such as tape players, film and slide projectors for recreational shows and productions.
Maintains attendance and financial records and prepares reports; collects money for classes and purchases supplies; attempts to trace and collect delinquent fees; attends and conducts sessions at meetings, workshops and training clinics; administers first aid.
Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of: techniques relating to a wide variety of organized recreation activities.
Working knowledge of: rules and conduct of a variety of sports and games; instructional techniques when assigned to a preschool; first aid techniques.
Some knowledge of: public relations principles and practices; records keeping and report writing.
Ability to: stimulate interest in recreational activities for all age groups; oversees the work of others; provide leadership in coordinating and conducting recreational activities; maintain records and compile reports; administer first aid; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, civic groups and the general public; perform activities requiring light to moderate physical exertion; operate a light motor vehicle if required.
