Researches and obtains information related to demography, planning and other areas in order to introduce, promote or relocate specific recreation programs an/or activities; reviews/recommends revisions in department policies pertaining to specific programs; may serve as a lead in the absence of a supervisor as needed.
Plans, promotes, teaches, oversees, and coordinates playground, classroom or after school activities such as sports, crafts, contests, homework, etc.; assists participants in use of computer labs; answers questions and discusses problems; may be required to transport participants in department vehicle or travel between sites.
Confers with recreation leaders/supervisors about organizational and administrative problems; provides input in planning and designing curriculum; aids in interpretation of department policies, rules, and regulations for recreation leaders, the public and concerned civic groups; assists with disciplinary problems; provides input to supervisor for completion of performance evaluations of staff; inspects recreational facilities, equipment, materials, and supplies; makes recommendations as needed.
Coordinates activities of a similar nature for several assigned recreational areas and for lower level recreation personnel; recruits or aids in recruitment of volunteers or specialists to conduct activities; confers with concerned community agencies as necessary; conducts in-service training programs for all recreation leaders; controls records, fees and funds; conducts fund raising activities and special events; prioritizes activities, schedules and resources; provides reports.
Develops ideas and scripts for video presentation; acts as a spokesperson at special events and as liaison between agencies; provides press releases; develops sponsorships.
Performs field maintenance work when necessary.
Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of: techniques relating to a specific subject, age group, or organized recreation activity; rules and conduct of a variety of sports and games.
Working knowledge of: instructional techniques when assigned to preschools; first aid; record keeping and report writing.
Some knowledge of: public relations.
Ability to: stimulate participation and support for recreational activities aimed at specific age or interest groups; supervise the work of others; provide leadership in coordinating and conducting recreational activities; maintain records and compile reports; administer first aid; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, civic groups and the general public; perform activities requiring light to moderate physical exertion; operate a light motor vehicle if required.
Skill in: administering first aid; operation and maintenance of recreational equipment and facilities.
