Introduction

This is supervisory and technical work involving street resurfacing, street maintenance, roadway and other construction and maintenance

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising a crew or crews engaged in moderately complex and technical construction and maintenance tasks. Under direction, employee performs and may participate, as necessary, in assignments, which are of more than average difficulty. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures requiring exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgment, and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Supervises and reviews work of a crew or crews and equipment engaged in moderately complex and technical public works, water, sewer, or utilities construction, maintenance, and repair operations; reads and interprets construction plans and specifications; inspects work in progress to ensure adherence to quality standards and safety; issues instructions and offers solutions to problems; enforces safety regulations and requirements.

Maintains attendance and inventory records; compiles construction reports; requisitions necessary equipment and materials; reads blueprints, diagrams, and sketches which accompany maintenance and construction assignments.

Discusses complaints/problems with others in order to understand and help resolve problems; determines and outlines material, supply, equipment, and personnel requirements for jobs to ensure proper and timely completion.

Plans, assigns, schedules, supervises, and reviews the work of subordinate personnel; recommends such personnel actions as employment, promotions, transfers, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals; responds to requests for leave; completes performance evaluations and administers required discipline.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: the methods, materials, and techniques used in maintenance and construction work; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Working knowledge of: effective supervisory techniques.

Some knowledge of: basic records keeping.

Ability to: plan, assign, supervise, and review the work of others; interpret blueprints and other plans; maintain records and compile reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform tasks requiring physical strength and endurance; operate a motor vehicle.

Skill in: the use and care of hand tools, power tools, and other related materials and equipment.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 40-60 lbs., mostly walking, sitting, and standing; a combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and three (3) years of progressively responsible maintenance and construction experience, including six (6) months of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of: a valid Class A Florida commercial driver’s license required.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
