Introduction

This is supervisory work involving operation and maintenance of municipal parking facilities.

Nature Of Work

The employee in this class is responsible for performing assignments of average difficulty including supervision of subordinate personnel involved in operating and maintaining municipal off-street parking facilities. Under general supervision, the employee receives instructions orally and in writing from a higher level supervisor. Since facilities are at various locations throughout the downtown area, the employee is required to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in overseeing the operations, safety and maintenance of assigned areas. Tact and impartiality are expected in contacts with the general public. The employee participates in selected personnel administration matters to include assigning work, administering discipline, and recommending promotions, transfers, training, dismissals, and salary increases. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Supervises and trains personnel at municipal off-street parking facilities; plans and maintains work schedules; reviews work to ensure that instructions are carried out.

Verifies reports of cashiers; balances receipts, transactions, and related payment amounts to totals to ensure accountability of transactions; counts and processes cash receipts; makes deposits of monies collected from all facilities.

Staffs and operates parking facilities during special events at the municipal convention center and other locations; directs traffic during special events.

Patrols facilities and watches for unlawful activities.

Assists with parking automobiles, when necessary; receives complaints from the general public and answers questions.

Participates in general maintenance and custodial care of municipal parking facilities; makes recommendations to supervisor on maintenance and operation of facilities; makes minor repairs on equipment; coordinates the maintenance and repair of division vehicles and equipment.

Orders supplies, as directed, for parking garages; receives shipments and disperses same to proper parties.

Recommends personnel actions such as discipline, reprimands, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals in order to correct or terminate inappropriate or unacceptable work behavior.

Operates digital paging system.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: parking facilities operations and mechanical maintenance.

Some knowledge of: financial records keeping, cashiering, and report writing; effective supervisory techniques.

Ability to: perform basic mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy; supervise and train personnel; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the general public; prepare accurate oral and written reports; perform general routine mechanical maintenance and repair work.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 40-60 lbs., mostly walking, standing and sitting. A combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school and one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in general office administration, preferably with six (6) months of experience in a public parking facilities operation.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license required.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
