Introduction

This is responsible supervisory automotive maintenance, repair, and servicing work.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of tasks of considerable difficulty involving scheduling, coordinating, and supervising the operation of a major automotive repair and service center. Under direction, employees’ responsibilities involve supervising maintenance and repair work performed on diverse automotive vehicles and equipment in support of a municipal fleet ranging from sedans and light trucks to specialty vehicles and heavy off-road construction equipment. In addition to supervising assignments of a technical nature, employees are expected to perform requisite personnel management activities including discipline administration, performance appraisals, training, and employee selection. Other tasks performed include providing input for developing work unit goals and objectives and formulating work methods and procedures for their accomplishment. The exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment is required in scheduling and assigning work activities and in ensuring timely completion. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation, conferences, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Schedules, coordinates, and supervises the operation of a major automotive repair and service center.

Assigns and oversees the performance of a variety of complex maintenance and/or specialized repair tasks on automotive, construction and/or special vehicles and equipment; inspects and tests completed work to ensure conformance to prescribed standards of quality and safety; provides technical assistance and guidance to subordinates in solving unusual or complex mechanical problems; supervises the dispensing of fuel, oil, and transmission fluid in servicing operation.

Prepares and maintains records and reports incidental to servicing, inspection, maintenance, and repair work accomplished by the work unit and supplies and materials used.

Recommends changes and adjustments in personnel to accommodate working conditions; trains and instructs subordinates in the proper use of tools and instruments, and in safety methods in order to avoid injuries; evaluates and recommends tool and equipment acquisition and replacement; develops and recommends work method modifications to improve work output and/or quality.

Documents customer complaints to correct problems or avoid reoccurrence; utilizes information provided by clients/complainants to complete service requests; answers questions on the telephone and in person to inform others about problems.

Uses a camera to document damage to vehicles and job sites.

Prepares written reports to provide information, data, findings, recommendations, etc.; performs mathematical calculations.

Provides input on repair center budget to be included in unit budget; recommends such personnel actions as employment, promotions, transfers, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals; administers required discipline and responds to employee grievances; completes performance evaluations.

Performs related work as required.    

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Extensive knowledge of: standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in automotive servicing, maintenance, and repair.

Considerable knowledge of: occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive maintenance and repair trade; construction, assembly, and maintenance requirements of diversified automotive equipment.

Working knowledge of: operation and use of a variety of automotive vehicles and equipment; effective supervisory techniques; maintenance planning and scheduling techniques.

Ability to: locate, define, and repair defects in a wide variety of general or specialized automotive equipment; plan, assign, and supervise the work of others; manage and direct operation of an automotive repair and service center; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public; follow oral and written instructions, prepare estimates and submit clear, accurate, and complete reports.

Skill in: use and care of tools and equipment of the trade.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 40-60 lbs., mostly standing and a combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in automotive equipment servicing, maintenance, and repair, including one (1) year of related supervisory experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Certification by National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE) in four (4) or more of the automobile or heavy-truck areas. Truck Line and Heavy Equipment must obtain certifications in Medium-Heavy Truck Certification Tests (T1 – T8). Sedan Line must obtain certifications in Automobile & Light Truck Certification Tests (A1 - A9) OR the ability to obtain NIASE certifications within six (6) months of employment.

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license; a valid Florida commercial driver’s license class “B” is required for Truck Line and Heavy equipment or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
