Introduction
This is responsible
semi-skilled services and general maintenance and repair
work. Bargaining unit position in different
departments with the city.
Nature Of Work
An employee in this
class is responsible for performing various semi-skilled manual tasks of
average difficulty in construction, maintenance, repair and/or other related
municipal services, performing janitorial/custodial tasks, operating power
tools and equipment and applying particularized knowledges and skills related
to area of assignment. Some positions might require employee to perform tasks
of a hazardous nature and/or to perform in a lead capacity. Under general
supervision, employee receives instructions orally and in writing and is
required to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in performing
assigned tasks. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion, through
observation and results obtained.
Examples of Duties
Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks including carpentry,
painting, brick masonry, and cement work; participates in construction,
maintenance, and repair of buildings, facilities, streets, and other
installations; operates power tools, trucks, and other light and medium
equipment.
Applies fertilizer and insecticide to city property; installs
diverse parking equipment to ensure efficient parking operations. Reads,
interprets and works from blueprints, diagrams and schematics.
Performs minor maintenance of municipal facilities and grounds;
performs landscaping and specialized gardening work; performs pool maintenance
and adds chemicals.
Performs janitorial/custodial tasks including mopping, sweeping,
picking up litter and emptying trash.
Assumes lead responsibilities in absence and by request of the
crew leader or supervisor; determines work priorities in order to make
assignments.
Operates a motor vehicle; operates communication equipment such
as radio, citizen band radio and paging system to communicate with necessary
parties.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
basic practices, materials and tools used in construction and maintenance work;
occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions; plant care, where
required.
Ability to: perform
tasks requiring physical strength and endurance as well as to climb and work at
heights where required; operate a motor vehicle; understand and follow oral and
written instructions; train lower-level personnel; establish and maintain
effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Skill in: use and care of hand
tools, power tools, painting equipment, and other related materials and
equipment.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 40-60 lbs., mostly standing, walking and a
combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer,
typing and viewing a monitor.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of High School and one (1) year of experience in services and/or building or mechanical maintenance or repair work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of: a pesticide application certificate where required; a valid Florida driver’s license is required; some positions may require a valid Florida Commercial driver’s license.
Examination
Evaluation
of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all
pre-employment processing.
Comments
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
