An employee in this class is responsible for
overseeing and participating, when necessary, in the work of a medium-sized to
large crew performing moderately complex construction, maintenance, and repair
tasks or other related municipal services. Under general supervision, the
employee is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment
in completing assignments, which are of more than average difficulty and are
performed in accordance with established procedures. At times, employees might
be required to work under hazardous conditions. Work is reviewed while in
progress and upon completion through observation and results obtained.
Oversees, schedules, assigns, and participates, when necessary, in the work of crews engaged in construction, maintenance, and repair of facilities and utilities relating to public works, water, sewer, and other municipal operations; verifies work orders; lines up necessary equipment; inspects work in progress, issues instructions and offers solutions to problems; operates light to heavy automotive equipment such as water truck, trash crane, forklift, pipe truck, and backhoe as required.
Installs construction signs and barricades in order to re-route traffic.
Assigns, directs, and reviews work of crews engaged in construction, maintenance, and repair of sanitary and storm sewers, streets, sidewalks, and curbs and in installation of water mains and meters; inspects materials and equipment delivered to job site for compliance with specifications; prepares, interprets, and reads diagrams, blueprints, and schematics.
Maintains records; issues work orders for major repairs; requisitions, issues, and accounts for supplies and equipment; oversees and trains new employees; recommends changes and adjustments to operating procedures to improve productivity; verifies legal descriptions of property; checks assigned vehicles for gas, oil, water, etc., so it will be ready for daily operation.
Operates radio,
pagers, and digital paging systems in order to communicate with necessary
parties.
Performs custodial
tasks in order to keep facility cleans; loads and unloads heavy items,
including supplies, equipment, and materials manually.
Performs related work as required.
Considerable
knowledge of: principles, practices, materials, techniques, and tools
used in construction, maintenance, and repair work; occupational hazards and
appropriate safety precautions. Working knowledge of: basic records keeping.
Ability to: assign, oversee, and review work of lower level personnel; understand,
interpret, and carry out written or oral instructions; perform work requiring
physical strength and endurance; maintain records and prepare reports;
establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Skill in: use and care of hand tools, power tools, and other related materials and
equipment; use and care of light to heavy automotive equipment.
Mostly outside work, able to lift up to 50 lbs., stand, works
outdoors very frequently. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a
monitor.
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in construction and maintenance work related to assigned area, including one (1) year lead in experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license; a valid
Florida Commercial driver’s license might be required.
Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
