This is highly skilled and technical lead work in the
installation, servicing, maintenance and repair of electrical systems.
An employee in this class serves in a lead capacity performing
skilled work of more than average difficulty providing guidance and oversight for
other technicians on assigned projects ensuring conformance with established
procedures. Under general supervision,
the employee performs a wide variety of highly technical duties related to electrical
system construction, maintenance and repair of facilities. This work requires the application of
reasonable initiative and independent judgement consistent with standard trade
practices and code requirements. Assigned
projects may require working non-standard duty hours and rotating shifts that include
nights, weekends and holidays. Work
reviewed through observation, conferences, reports submitted and results
obtained.
Leads and participates in the more difficult installation,
alteration, repair and maintenance of electrical, lighting, electronic, alarm,
signaling, monitoring and emergency power systems, fixtures and appliance equipment;
provides guidance, assigns tasks, trains and inspects the work of lower level
electricians and fellow technical maintenance employees in performing major
renovations and construction of offices and work sites.
Reviews work orders for facilities and schedules by priority
of work, coordinating with the supervisor and with user departments; prepares
materials, cost estimates and provides technical reports of electrical
operational issues; prepares sketches of electrical layouts and
installations.
Inspects electrical work done by City staff and contractors for
compliance to codes and standards; provides advice, guidance, assistance and
training to technicians; reports on work progress.
Recommends electrical system requirements for facilities and
conducts inspections on new installations of electrical systems, modifications
of existing equipment, motors, and related electrically operated apparatus; ensures
tasks are performed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, National
Fire Alarm and Signaling Code as well as other regulations related to standard
trade practices and safety procedures.
Determines routing, location and method of installing
wiring, conduit, equipment, fixtures and accessories from complex drawings,
wiring diagrams, ladder logic, blueprints and sketches; tests, calibrates and
programs control panels and devices; installs, maintains and troubleshoots
control systems related to security alarms, fire alarms and lighting control
systems; performs calculations to size electrical services, equipment circuits,
transformers, UPS units, panels, breakers, box and conduit fill and wire
sizes.
May be required to assume responsibility of controlling
electrical emergencies.
Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of: principles, practices,
materials, tools and equipment used in installation, maintenance and repair of
electrical, lighting, electronic, alarm, control, signaling, monitoring and
emergency power systems; occupational hazards and appropriate safety
precautions.
Working knowledge of:
National Electrical Code, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, ADA
compliance standards, computer operation, data entry, record keeping and
reports
Ability to: perform and oversee the work of others in
electrical installation repair and maintenance; follow established procedures,
prioritize work, establish and maintain effective working relationships with
other employees and the general public; communicate effectively both orally and
in writing; ability to work in confined spaces, on ladders, scaffolding, towers
and lift buckets up to a considerable height; operate light and medium sized
motor vehicles including trucks and vans; operate various size articulating
boom and scissor lifts; towing of equipment and utilizing trailers for
transporting materials and equipment; standard motor vehicle safety; read and
understand electrical diagrams; distinguish differences in wire and cable
colors; operate an automotive vehicle.
Skill in: use and care of electrical testing,
diagnostic and repair equipment; application of leadership techniques
Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational
school and completion of electrical apprenticeship program supplemented by
special courses in electrical repair and maintenance and five (5) years of
progressively responsible experience working as a certified Journeyman
electrician or above or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Possession of a Hillsborough County Journeyman Electrician
license; Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license required.
