This is highly skilled electrical maintenance work.  Bargaining unit position.

An employee in this class is responsible for performing assignments of more than average difficulty involving electrical maintenance. Tasks require the employee to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment when installing, modifying or repairing various items of electrical equipment, as well as ensuring responsibility for controlling electrical emergencies. In addition, the employee is required to work with high voltage equipment. Depending on work assignment, the employee might be required to lead lower-level employees. Under general supervision, the employee receives instructions orally and in writing with work being reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation, conferences, and reports submitted.

Performs electrical work in buildings, facilities, bridges, and plants; installs, maintains, modifies, and repairs electrical fixtures and equipment including power appliances, overhead circuits, underground conduits, motors, relays, switches, and control boxes up to and including 13,200V application and DC voltages; installs wall outlets and connects motors, appliances, heating and cooling equipment, transformers, and motor control circuitry.

Maintains, repairs and adjusts meters, governors and timers; installs and assists in the maintenance and repair of electrical motors and generators used in various pumping operations; uses hand, bench and machine tools in repair and maintenance of cranes, pumps, and other plant machinery and equipment; operates cutting torches and welders.

Detects causes of electrical failures; interprets and ensures compliance with electrical codes; calculates line leads to determine wire and equipment size and capacity; prepares sketches for electrical layouts and installation.

Operates light automotive equipment.

Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, diagrams and schematics.

Cuts and threads pipes in order to facilitate installation or repair.

Builds concrete foundations to facilitate construction.

Performs lubrication, preventative maintenance and periodic maintenance/adjustments to bridge operating systems.

Performs yard operations such as clean-up, minor repair, sorting of scrap materials, and other related duties.

Loads and unloads heavy items including supplies, equipment and materials manually.

Installs construction signs and barricades in order to re-route traffic.

Installs solid state/electromechanical flashers to ensure proper functioning.

Checks safety equipment to ensure operations and compliance with safety regulations.

Performs related work as required.

Working knowledge of: the standard tools, methods, materials, and practices of the electrical trade; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions, to include work with high voltages; municipal and national electrical codes.

Ability to: interpret and work from technical sketches and blueprints; locate, define, and repair defects in electrical facilities and equipment; plan, layout, install, alter, repair, and maintain a variety of electrical systems and equipment, some of which are relatively complex; understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions, establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform work requiring physical strength; operate light motor vehicles.

Skill in: use and care of standard tools, equipment, and testing devices of the electrical trade.

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school supplemented by college level course work in electrical engineering and six (6) months related experience; OR, graduation from an accredited high school with reasonable related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
