An employee in
this class is responsible for performing tasks of relative difficulty involving
the safe operation of special service equipment in support of department’s
maintenance activities. Under general supervision, employees are required to
exercise initiative and independent
judgement in completing assigned tasks. Tasks at times are performed under
hazardous conditions and require employees to be extremely alert and careful
whenever operating assigned equipment. Employees might be required to perform
manual and unskilled laboring tasks, using hand and power tools, either
separately from or in conjunction with equipment being operated. Employees
might also be required to operate complex construction/maintenance equipment on
a relief basis or in a training capacity, and serve in a lead capacity over other
equipment operators and laboring personnel. Work is reviewed while in progress
and upon completion by observation and through results obtained.
Safely operates
a variety of complex special service equipment including, but not limited to
lightning loaders, pay loaders, wheeled and tracked excavators, cranesand other
heavy equipment; may operate various equipment at the transfer stations, responds
to requests for special pick up of heavy accumulation of refuse from customer locations, ; exercises extreme
care while operating equipment; observes safety rules and obeys traffic laws.
Performs minor
maintenance and servicing on vehicle/equipment being operated to include
checking tire air pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel, and draining
air tanks, when required; visually checks vehicle/equipment and reports maintenance
repair problems at the beginning and the end of the workday; assures that
vehicle is properly equipped, serviced and cleaned.
Assigns, monitors, and reviews the work of other equipment operators, service attendants, and
others engaged in maintenance, repair and similar activities; performs manual
and unskilled laboring tasks; uses hand tools and operates power tools either
separate from or in conjunction with vehicles/equipment being operated.
Operates complex
construction/maintenance equipment on a relief basis or in an on-the job
training capacity to acquire experience and develop skill and proficiency.
Transports people, material, tools, and equipment to and from sites to ensure
efficiency and safety; ensures that equipment is stored to prevent theft and
vandalism; operates 2-way radio, tablets or phones to communicate with all necessary
parties.
Completes
periodic time/activity reports to document work activities; gathers
information/completes forms; prepares work and completes all assigned work
orders; verifies logs and records.
Performs related work as
required.
Working knowledge of: operational
and minor maintenance characteristics of lightning loader; pay loaders, wheeled
and track excavators, cranes and other heavy equipment related to the area of
assignment; traffic laws, occupational hazards and appropriate safety
precautions.
Some knowledge of: the use and care of hand and power tools and equipment related to assigned areas; the city and its geography.
Ability
to: perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; establish and
maintain effective working relationships with others; acquire skill and develop
proficiency in the operation of diverse complex motorized
construction/maintenance equipment.
Skill and ability to: demonstrate proficiency in special collection services equipment
for all assigned area within the division.
Completion of
accredited high school or vocational school and one (1) year of experience in
operating lightning loader, pay loader and open body truck; or an equivalent
combination of training and experience.
Possession of a valid Florida
Commercial driver’s license, Class “A” or “B” with Air Brakes.
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
