Safely operates a variety of lightweight trucks including carryalls, cargo/passenger vans, step vans, pickups, and dump trucks; transports people, material, tools, equipment, supplies, and parts from various locations; hauls sand, rock, shell, water, asphalt, gravel, rubbish, trash, sludge, and other bulky, heavy items and substances; pulls trailers in transporting equipment and supplies; operates simple motorized construction/ maintenance equipment including steel wheel and pneumatic rollers, industrial sweepers, backhoe/trencher/blade combinations of 35 horsepower and below, and warehouse and rough terrain forklifts.
Performs minor maintenance and servicing on vehicle/equipment being operated to include checking tire air pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel, and bleeding brake air tanks where required; visually checks vehicle/equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and end of the workday; assures that vehicle is properly equipped, serviced, and cleaned.
Performs manual and unskilled laboring, maintenance, and custodial tasks; uses hand tools and operates power tools either separately from or in conjunction with vehicle/equipment being operated; organizes cleanup of trash and obstacles in order to keep area clean; operates lawn mower to cut grass; installs construction signs and barricades in order to re-route traffic.
Operates heavier and more complex vehicles/equipment on a relief basis or in an on-the-job training capacity to acquire experience and develop skill and proficiency.
Maintains funeral grounds; lays out ball diamonds to provide recreational facilities for residents.
Applies fertilizer and insecticide on city property in order to complete assigned duties.
Completes periodic time/activity reports and forms.
Operates radio and other communication devices to communicate with necessary parties.
Performs related work as required.
Working knowledge of: traffic laws, occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions associated with the operation of automotive equipment.
Some knowledge of: operational and minor maintenance characteristics of lightweight trucks and simple motorized construction/maintenance equipment; the use and care of hand and power tools and equipment related to the assigned areas; the city and its geography.
Ability to: acquire skill and develop proficiency in the operation of heavier trucks and more complex construction/maintenance equipment; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Skill and ability to demonstrate proficiency in: the operation of lightweight trucks and/or simple, motorized construction/maintenance equipment.
Skill in: the use and care of hand and power tools related to assigned areas.
Mostly outside work, able to lift up to 50 lbs., stand, works
outdoors very frequently. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a
monitor.
