Safely operates a variety of complex construction/maintenance equipment including, but not limited to: asphalt paving machines for putting down a top layer of asphalt on the base of streets; motor graders for subgrading and leveling; bulldozers for grading and back-filling; truck mounted and crawler cranes, both hydraulic and cable, for loading, lifting, digging, and back-filling in construction and maintenance activities; fifth wheel tractor trucks with lowboy transport trailer for transporting heavy off-road construction equipment; heavy wreckers for towing disabled heavy vehicles/equipment; skid steers, water trucks, payloaders, dump trucks etc.
Performs minor maintenance and servicing on vehicle/equipment being operated to include checking tire air pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel, and bleeding brake air tanks where required; visually checks vehicle/equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and the end of the workday; assures that vehicle is properly equipped, serviced and cleaned.
Assigns, oversees, and reviews the work of lower level equipment operators, service attendants, and others engaged in maintenance, repair, and similar activities; performs manual and unskilled laboring tasks; uses hand tools and operates power tools either separate from or in conjunction with vehicle/equipment being operated.
Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of: operational and minor maintenance characteristics of complex motorized construction/maintenance equipment; traffic laws, occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
Working knowledge of: the use and care of hand and power tools and equipment related to assigned areas.
Some knowledge of: the city and its geography.
Ability to: perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; acquire skill and develop proficiency in the operation of motorized specialty construction/maintenance equipment; act in a lead capacity over lower level operators and laboring personnel.
Skill and ability to demonstrate proficiency in: the operation of complex motorized construction/maintenance equipment.
Skill in: the use and care of hand and power tools related to assigned areas.
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including
nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the
Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may
be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to
the stated emergency.
