Introduction

This is supervisory and skilled air conditioning equipment operations work.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising and participating in operation of large capacity heating, air conditioning, and ventilating equipment at a major municipal facility. Work is of more than average difficulty and also includes training, scheduling, and supervising subordinate operators, maintaining records, and performing minor maintenance and repair tasks. Under direction, employee is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgement in supervising and performing assignments of which an important part includes insuring safe and efficient operation of heating and air conditioning equipment. At times, employee may be required to work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Assigns, schedules, supervises, trains, and reviews work of subordinate climate control operators and trainees; develops and implements preventive maintenance programs for equipment used; prepares time and material cost estimates for preventive maintenance.

Supervises and participates in operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment; ensures that equipment is producing correct temperature conditions; tests water in air conditioning systems and adds necessary chemicals; periodically tests equipment to assure proper functioning.

Writes bid specifications for new equipment and alterations to existing equipment; checks work performed by contractors to ensure conformance with specifications; requisitions necessary parts, materials, and chemicals for operation and maintenance of equipment.

Maintains records and writes reports; takes water and electrical meter readings; reviews recorded chart readings, meter readings, gauge readings, and temperature readings and makes changes and suggestions to improve efficiency and safety.

Recommends personnel actions such as employment, promotions, transfers, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals; administers required discipline and responds to employee grievances; responds to employee leave requests; completes performance evaluations.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: heating, air conditioning, ventilating, and allied equipment operations; safety precautions and procedures of the trade; records keeping and report writing.

Working knowledge of: maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment.

Some knowledge of: supervisory and training techniques.

Ability to: assign, schedule, supervise, train, and review work of others; operate heating, ventilating, air conditioning and allied equipment safely and efficiently; maintain records and write reports; perform maintenance and repair tasks on air conditioning, heating, ventilating, and allied equipment; perform work requiring moderate physical exertion; operate a lightweight motor vehicle; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the general public.

Skill in: operation, maintenance, and repair of applicable equipment; use of tools employed in the trade.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and five (5) years experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, air conditioning, ventilating direct expansion (D/X) equipment under 10 tons, electrical and/or plumbing work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of: a valid Florida driver's license; a Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
