Operates machines to fabricate special parts and tools for the purpose of modifying, reconditioning, and repairing specialized machinery; operates all types of hand and machine tools, including engine lathes, milling machines, planers, and shapers in rehabilitation and modification of machinery and equipment.
Sets up work in machines and selects correct cutting tools for each type machine; checks dimensions of parts with micrometers, calipers, gauges, and ruler.
Makes and checks field measurements and observations using tape measure and other equipment; reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, diagrams, and schematics; proofreads own work to correct mistakes.
Cleans, oils, and performs regular maintenance of shop equipment; sharpens cutting tools on grinders; maintains inventory of all machine shop tools.
Installs new plumbing such as pipes, valves, drains, basins, faucets, etc., to facilitate their use in municipal offices, buildings, and facilities.
Cuts and threads pipes to facilitate installation or repair.
Uses precision measuring equipment, calipers, vibration analyzers, and micrometers.
Completes daily time and activity reports to document work activities; operates a lightweight motor vehicle.
Serves in a lead or training capacity as required.
Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of: standard methods, procedures, practices, tools and equipment used in the machinist trade; working properties of various metals to include aluminum, steel, wrought iron, and cast iron; working properties and various specialized machinery and equipment; use and care of hand and machine tools and precision instruments.
Working knowledge of: occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions; welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Ability to: operate hand and machine tools and use precision instruments for checking, measuring and marking dimensions; make specialized machine parts and tools; read and interpret blueprints and layout work accordingly; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; operate a lightweight motor vehicle.
Skill in: use of machine shop tools and equipment.
