Introduction

This is skilled and supervisory work in maintenance and mechanical repair of aircraft and related equipment.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for maintaining aircraft in a flight-ready condition ensuring compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. Under direction, employee performs tasks which are of more than average difficulty requiring exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment in maintaining, repairing, and reconditioning aircraft engines, airframes, and specialized aircraft equipment and supervising the work of Police Aircraft Mechanics. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through test flights by a certified police aircraft pilot.

Examples of Duties

Inspects aircraft and equipment periodically to determine need for repair; repairs and reconditions aircraft engines, airframes, and other standard or specialized aircraft equipment.

Performs preventive maintenance on fixed wing and rotary wing engines and airframes; tunes engines; makes repairs and adjustments as required.

Maintains aircraft parts and equipment inventory; reorders parts as necessary; arranges for outside maintanance on aircraft.

Maintains repair logs for aircraft; prepares and submits reports as required.

Provides advice and technical guidance to subordinate employees; assigns and reviews work of subordinates; recommends such personnel actions as employment, promotions, transfers, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals; administers required discipline and responds to employee grievances; completes performance evaluations; provides or arranges training for subordinates.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the aircraft mechanic trade; mechanics of specialized fixed wing and rotary wing engines, airframes, and equipment; effective supervisory techniques.

Ability to: locate, define, and repair defects in aircraft engines, airframes, and other specialized equipment; maintain records and write reports; maintain parts and equipment inventories; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Skill in: use and care of the standard tools and equipment of the trade; training subordinates on new methods of aircraft repair.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree, supplemented by graduation from an F.A.A. approved airframe and power-plant school, and five (5) years of experience as an aircraft mechanic on fixed wing and rotary aircraft, or related aircraft experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate.

 

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license is required.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
