This is police work in a lead capacity.
Serves as supervisor in the absence or upon request of the unit sergeant; assists in setting up schedules and editing reports; completes written evaluations on subordinate personnel, as required.
When assigned as a field instructor in a district: performs all those duties normally assigned to police officers; serves as lead field instructor in riding with and training probationary police officers; makes written evaluations of the probationary officer and recommends retention or dismissal; edits reports completed by the probationary officer; re-trains other officers as requested by the sergeant; advises officers in situations where advice or help is requested.
When assigned to the selective enforcement unit: participates in such plainclothes activities as protecting and escorting political candidates, VIPs and others; participates in crowd and traffic control, parade security and vice control.
When assigned to the crime prevention bureau: prepares and presents crime prevention programs; operates audiovisual and other teaching aid equipment; instructs classes when assigned; represents department at meetings; may administer and direct the activities of the Police Athletic League.
When assigned to the school resource program: presents crime prevention programs for students at an assigned school; counsels students and parents or refers to the appropriate social agency for help; conducts latent investigations of cases originated by self or assigned by sergeant; develops and provides information for presentation to interested agencies explaining the nature, objectives and operation of the School Resource Officer Program.
Performs work related to purposes of the Police Department as required.
Working knowledge of: modern police procedures, methods and terminology; civil and criminal laws, police rules and regulations, and standard operating procedures; local geography.
Some knowledge of: supervisory techniques; effective training techniques.
Ability to: train and evaluate subordinate employees; perform complete and thorough investigations; analyze problems and objectively deal with people; observe and record incidents clearly and completely, and write clear and concise reports; give directions and act calmly and quickly in emergency or hazardous situations; perform the duties of sergeant as required; establish and maintain effective working relationships with trainees, other officers, supervisors, officials, and the general public.
Skill in: the use and care of firearms and other standard police equipment; the operation of motor vehicles.
-One (1) year of experience with the Tampa Police department in a sworn capacity; and
-One (1) year of college credits (30-semester or 45-quarter hours); and
-A rating of satisfactory or higher on the most recent performance evaluation.
