City of Tampa

 An employee assigned to this class is responsible for performing specialized and hazardous police work of average difficulty and responsibility at selected schools for the crime prevention bureau of the Tampa Police Department.  Tasks include detection, prevention, and abatement of juvenile crime, and determination of its contributing factors.  An important aspect of this work is establishing a better understanding, on the part of the students, of the role of a police officer.  Work is on assignment basis by the Chief of Police; therefore, the employee cannot expect to achieve regular status in this classification.  Under general supervision, the employee must exercise initiative, independent judgment and discretion in performing assigned duties, as well as tact and courtesy in dealing with the public, especially juveniles, school officials and parents.  Work is reviewed through observation, reports submitted, and results obtained.  

 Investigates criminal complaints reported occurring in assigned schools; conducts accident and criminal investigations on the scene.

Inspects establishments suspected of contributing to school crime for the purpose of detecting conditions of prostitution, vice or gambling.

Interrogates students who have been arrested; interviews necessary persons to elicit information regarding crimes involving students; prepares court cases and appears in court as a prosecution witness.

Develops a friendly relationship with students and parents; counsels students and parents on both school related and personal problems; refers students and parents to an appropriate social agency for help if necessary.

Assists in locating missing or wanted students; assists in the recovery of stolen school property; performs routine patrol or other duties when necessary.

Maintains necessary records; prepares reports; makes crime prevention presentations.

Performs work related to purposes of the Police Department as required.

Working knowledge of:  police rules, regulations, laws and ordinances; modern police investigative methods and techniques; sociology and psychology; problems experienced by juveniles and the solutions to those problems.

Ability to:  write clear, concise, timely and accurate reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental officials, other police officers, school officials, students, parents, and the general public; act calmly, objectively and quickly in emergencies.     

Skill in:  the use and care of firearms and other standard police equipment.

Two (2) years of experience with the City of Tampa as a Police Officer and completion of an approved training course.

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.
