Introduction

This is highly responsible supervisory work in monitoring activities of various inventory and stores locations.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks of considerable difficulty in field supervision of a group of inventory and stores locations throughout the city. A major function of this position is the planning, implementing, directing, supervising, and monitoring of inventory control activities. Under general direction, employees are required to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgement in directing the efficient operation of the division and in supervising the assigned supervisory, technical, and clerical support personnel. Considerable independence of action is required of these employees as they are responsible for a variety of stores areas located throughout the city. Employees are required to operate a lightweight motor vehicle to travel between work locations. Work is reviewed through conferences, observation, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Supervises the maintenance of the computerized inventory control records; establishes and reviews scientifically derived reorder points for all items maintained in stock; analyzes and classifies inventory and reviews, on a continuing basis, items maintained in stock for possible deletion or disposal; analyzes orders of non-inventoried items to identify those to be placed into a stocking status.

Plans, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of subordinate clerical and/or technical personnel; provides training, technical advice and guidance to subordinates; recommends such personnel actions as employments, promotions, transfers, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals; administers required discipline; serves as initial respondent in the grievance procedure; completes employee performance evaluations.

Participates in design, implementation and maintenance of centralized inventory accounting system, coordinating needs and systems of assigned areas with those of departmental personnel; reviews the existing inventory system and develops and presents recommendations for system changes.

Reviews budgeted amounts for inventory accounts and prepares personnel cost allocations.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Extensive knowledge of: materials, supplies, parts, and equipment used by the city; standard methods, practices, and procedures employed in acquisition, storage and issuance of inventory items.

Considerable knowledge of: purchasing and requisitioning practices and procedures; accounting principles and practices; records keeping as employed in inventory control; effective supervisory techniques.

Ability to: assign, schedule, supervise, and review the work of others; establish and maintain clerical and financial records keeping and inventory systems; perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy; accurately conduct inventories; review price lists and material specifications, and draw sound conclusions; prepare and submit clear, concise, and accurate reports; make and effectively present recommendations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Physical Requirements

Mostly sedentary, indoors, requires extended use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor. 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college with an associate's degree in accounting, wholesale distribution management or a related field and at least ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in acquisition, storage and issuance of supplies or accounting as it relates to inventory control including three (3) years in a supervisory capacity; OR  an equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a high school diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job related competencies noted above.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
