Nature Of Work
An employee in this class is responsible for utilizing GIS technologies to perform geo-spatial data collection, processing and analysis. Employees perform routine technical work in GIS involving heavy amounts of database entry and management, generation of maps, and user support under supervision of senior GIS staff. Work is of average difficulty and involves maintenance of data resources and operation of GIS software within the context of programs and policy directives. The exercise of some initiative and independent judgment is required in: producing maps, reports, spatial databases, thematic data sets, parcel map data, etc. according to agency needs and requirements; digitizing and integrating GIS data from a variety of sources; troubleshooting and verifying data; coding, calculating, editing, and joining attributes to geographic features; and, technical writing. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed through conferences; reports submitted and results obtained.
Examples of Duties
Updates, maintains and
creates GIS layers to represent current conditions; prepares and compiles data,
special purpose maps and graphics; coordinates with other departments and
agencies to receive necessary information.
Assists in:
development and maintenance of the GIS by performing graphic and non-graphic
data entry and geoprocessing of various databases; development of automated
procedures for accessing the GIS and other database systems; performing
research, interpreting and preparing cartographic and geographically referenced
source data for digital input; establishing and preparing standard map formats,
queries and reports; assessing the reliability of input data.
Performs limited
spatial analyses using GIS software.
Provides technical
assistance to others on assigned projects and serves as a resource person to
other departments on GIS related topics; refers and discusses complex problems
with supervisor or other designated contacts as appropriate.
Documents work
completed in conformance with established procedures.
Performs related work
as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working
knowledge of: GIS systems
(MapInfo, ArcView, etc).
Ability
to: assist with
researching spatial data availability from internal and external sources;
collect, assimilate, analyze, and interpret data and draw sound conclusions;
prepare oral and written reports; establish and maintain effective working
relationships with other employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a
bachelor’s degree in geography, computer science, math, planning or a related
field and one (1) year of experience in the use of a commercial GIS software
package (ESRI, MapInfo)
OR
An equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a high school diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of a valid drivers license may be required.
Comments
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
