Introduction
This is entry level work in conducting gymnastics and/or dance instruction. Bargaining unit position.
Nature Of Work
The employee in this class is responsible for gymnastics instruction/coaching of average difficulty, summer camps, and/or youth sports at an assigned recreation area. Under general supervision, the employee performs assignments that include maintaining necessary equipment and monitoring the environment assigned. Tasks require the exercise of some initiative and independent judgement in planning and promoting gymnastics activities. The majority of positions in this class are part-time and require varying schedules including work during evening hours and weekends. Work is reviewed through observations, conferences, and results obtained.
Examples of Duties
Teaches children’s gymnastics and dance summer camps, and/or youth sports, including, but not limited to skateboarding, activities; assists in, plans and promotes gymnastics, dance and/or youth sports exhibitions; prepares participants for competitions; travels with gymnastics teams on occasion; provides assistance to instructors in the development of plans for classes and competition.
Sets up gymnasium for all activities; orders, inspects and maintains gymnastics/athletic equipment; administers first aid.
Maintains accurate records of attendance, property damage, special activities, and accidents; attends and conducts sessions at meetings, workshops and training clinics; coordinates programs and activities with co-workers and supervisor; promotes good public relations with community; answers phones and provides information concerning programs and use of center.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Some knowledge of: first aid techniques; principles, rules, materials, and equipment requirements of gymnastics, dance and/or youth sports activities.
Skills in: execution of gymnastics, dance and/or youth sports activities; use and care of pertinent equipment.
Ability to: plan and organize a specialized recreational activity; stimulate interest and enthusiasm of various age groups in gymnastics, dance and/or youth sports activities; demonstrate execution of basic levels of gymnastics, dance and/or youth sports instruction; administer first aid; perform activities requiring physical strength and endurance; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Physical Requirements
Mostly standing, recreation and a combination of working
indoors and outdoors. Requires some use
of computer, typing and viewing a monitor
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school with six (6) months of experience in participating, coaching (volunteer or paid) teaching gymnastics, dance and/or youth sports; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Graduation from an accredited high school with six (6) months of experience in teaching gymnastics and/or dance; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate within six (6) months of appointment;
Valid driver's license required;
U.S.A. Gymnastics Safety Certification or Other Sports Related Certification
Comments
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights,
weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
