Introduction

This is specialized work in overseeing, preparing and conducting gymnastics, dance and/or youth sports programs. Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing technical assignments of more than average difficulty in instructing participants in the technical fundamentals of gymnastics, dance, summer camps, and/or youth sports at an assigned recreation area. Under general supervision, the employee performs assignments which include ordering, maintaining necessary equipment and monitoring the environment assigned. Tasks require the exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgement in planning and promoting gymnastics and/or dance activities. The majority of positions in this class will require varying schedules including nights and weekends. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Plans, promotes, organizes, and teaches gymnastic, dance, summer camp, and/or youth sports activities; plans and promotes gymnastics/dance/youth sports exhibitions; prepares participants for gymnastics/dance/youth sports competitions; travels with gymnastics/dance/youth sports team; obtains volunteers to assist with events; answers phone and provides information concerning programs and use of center.


Oversees instructors in assigned divisions; organizes fund-raising projects; sets up gymnasium for all activities; orders, inspects, and maintains gymnastics/youth sports equipment; administers first aid; conducts safety talks and monitors latest safety codes to facilitate compliance by employees; responsible for in-house staff training; insures security of buildings when leaving area.

Maintains accurate records of attendance, property damage, special activities, and accidents; attends and conducts sessions at meetings, workshops and training clinics; coordinates programs and activities with coworkers and supervisor; assists in evaluation of lower level employees; promotes good public relations with community; receives, accounts for, processes, and deposits funds for payment.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of: principles, rules, materials, and equipment requirements of gymnastics/dance/youth sports activities. Record keeping and report writing helpful as well as ; the use and care of tools and equipment pertinent to gymnastics/dance/youth sports.

Skill in: execution of gymnastics/dance/youth sports activities; use and care of pertinent equipment.

Ability to: plan, organize and oversee a specialized recreational activity; stimulate interest and enthusiasm of various age groups in gymnastics/dance/youth sports activities; organize and oversee the work of others; administer first aid; perform activities requiring physical strength and endurance; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.  Instructional ability to demonstrate the execution of a class inclusive of beginner through competitive team level gymnastics/dance/youth sports.


Physical Requirements

Mostly standing, recreation and a combination of working indoors and outdoors.  Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of two (2) years of college with three (3) years of experience in teaching/participating/volunteering gymnastics/dance/youth sports; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a: Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate within six (6) months of employment;

 A valid Florida driver's license preferred; 

U.S.A. Gymnastics Safety Certification or Other Sports Related Certification within one (1) year of appointment.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
