Introduction

This is responsible recreation work in conducting tennis programs and providing administrative support to the tennis center staff.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

Employees in this class are responsible for performing activities of average difficulty at an assigned recreation center, community center, park or playground. Generally, employees perform assigned tasks independently and are responsible for a specific recreation center facility. Under general supervision, employees in this position will develop, teach, demonstrate, coordinate, and aid in promotion of tennis programs and related activities for all age groups and backgrounds as well as working with contract instructors. Employees are required to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in planning, organizing and conducting activities. Employees may be responsible for daily and/or seasonal court maintenance, including but not limited to lining, grooming and application of clay. The nature of this recreation function may require the employee to work varying schedules including nights and weekends. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Provides front desk assistance.

Performs court maintenance to include lining, grooming and/or application of clay.

Works with contract instructors.

Teaches tennis classes, clinics and summer camps.

Coordinates special tennis/recreation events.

Performs related work as required. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: tennis instruction, planning and administration of recreation programs; equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community tennis facility.

Ability to: develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, contract instructors, community leaders, and the general public; communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Skill in: administering First Aid and CPR. 

Physical Requirements

Mostly standing, recreation and a combination of working indoors and outdoors.  Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of one (1) year of college and one (1) year of experience in organized tennis programs, preferably in an instructional or coaching capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

CPR and First Aid certification required.

U.S. Professional Tennis Registry and U.S. Professional Tennis Association certifications preferred. 

Possession of a valid drivers license may be required.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
