Introduction

This is entry-level racquet sports related work.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing or assisting in a variety of activities of average difficulty at various racquet sports facilities. Under immediate supervision, the employee performs routine tasks such as recommending programs or activities. Since the employee works with a higher level leader, the exercise of only limited initiative and independent judgement is required. Tact and courtesy are required when dealing with the public. Evening and weekend hours may be required. Work is reviewed through continuous observation and results obtained upon completion.

Examples of Duties

Schedules telephone reservations and collects fees for court time; collects pro shop sales; deposits money in safe.

Assists in planning and conducting tournaments, leagues, and round robins; assists in organizing, coordinating, and scheduling all racquet sports programs, social activities, and special events; assists in scheduling and conducting instructional clinics; teaches tennis and racquetball to persons of all ages and abilities; counsels participants as needed.

Maintains discipline at assigned area and confers with the public regarding rules and regulations or discipline problems; teaches fair play and sportsmanship; administers first aid and CPR; promotes safety; maintains athletic equipment; performs court maintenance as necessary; inspects recreation facility, apparatus and equipment to ensure safety; maintains inventory of supplies; submits requisitions for needed repairs/supplies.

Maintains accurate records of receipts, attendance, property damage, special activities, and accidents; prepares necessary reports; attends meetings, workshops and training clinics; coordinates programs and activities with co-workers and supervisor; promotes good public relations with community.

Performs related work as required. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Some knowledge of: the techniques of organized racquet sports activities; the rules and conduct of racquet sports related games; instructional techniques; first aid techniques; records keeping and report writing techniques.

Ability to: assist in coordinating and conducting racquet sports activities; provide instruction to participants in group games and sports; assist in counseling and advising participants; stimulate public participation and support for racquet sports activities; maintain records and compile reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and general public; perform activities requiring light to moderate physical exertion.

Skill in: administering first aid; the operation, care and maintenance of racquet sports equipment. 

Physical Requirements

Mostly standing, recreation and a combination of working indoors and outdoors.  Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school, with six (6) months of experience in organized racquet sports activities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of: Standard First Aid and CPR Certificates within six (6) months of appointment.  

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
