This is responsible recreation work in a lead capacity with special programs in creative arts, fine arts, special events or with the disabled or elderly.    Bargaining unit position.

An employee in this class is responsible for performing activities of average difficulty in coordinating and participating in special programs such as creative arts, fine arts or work with the disabled or elderly at an assigned recreation center. Under general supervision, the employee performs these assigned tasks independently, and is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgement in planning, scheduling, conducting, and overseeing activities. The employee might be required to work varying schedules including nights and weekends, and to travel to various locations. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Plans, promotes, and conducts recreational activities; teaches and/or oversees creative arts, fine arts, special events or programs for the elderly or disabled; performs in a variety of theatrical programs; schedules center activities.

Constructs puppets, props, scenery, and costumes; oversees lower level employees in the creation and manipulation of puppets as needed; plans and writes scripts; conducts oneperson activities such as puppet stories and creative dramatics.

Operates audiovisual equipment such as film and slide projectors and tape players; operates sound and light systems; operates power tools and equipment necessary to construction of puppets, scenery and stage properties.

Plans, organizes, conducts, and evaluates diverse programs of special recreation activities and events designed to meet the needs of elderly or disabled citizens such as sports, music, arts and crafts, social recreation, dramatics, camping, dancing, and swimming.

Consults with individuals and groups representing the target populations to determine recreation needs and interests; contacts public and private agencies for assistance in transportation, health services, legal problems, and educational and other needs.

Works with physicians and other medical social service personnel who prescribe recreation therapy for patients to ensure that it is properly provided.

Prepares and submits reports; verifies purchase orders and requisitions; takes orders and purchases supplies for activities; estimates materials required for arts and crafts; maintains records, logs, lists, and forms.

Inspects recreational facilities and equipment to ensure safety; enforces proper safety practices, and occupational safety rules and regulations; ensures security of building.

Performs related work as required.

 

Considerable knowledge of: techniques, aids, and use and care of equipment applicable to a wide variety of recreation, creative arts, fine arts, special events and special population activities; emotional and physical problems of the disabled and elderly.

Working knowledge of: basic records keeping.

Some knowledge of: first aid and CPR; public relations.

Ability to: coordinate and conduct recreational activities; counsel and advise participants; oversee the work of others; maintain records and compile reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, community groups, and the general public; stimulate participation and support for activities from target populations, municipal officials and outside agencies; perform activities requiring light to moderate physical strength and endurance; work effectively with health care/social service professionals in the planning of client services; operate a lightweight motor vehicle if required.

Skill in: administering first aid and CPR; care/maintenance of recreational equipment; operating power tools and sound and light systems.

Mostly standing, recreation and a combination of working indoors and outdoors.  Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of two (2) years of college with coursework in recreation, recreation therapy, physical education, leisure services, art, theater, or a closely related field, with three (3) years of experience in specialized recreation programs, preferably in an instructional or theatrical performance capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid Florida class E driver’s license.

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
