Introduction

 This is entry- level recreation work with special programs in visual arts, and special events activities for citizens of all ages and abilities.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for programs such as fine arts for citizens of all ages and abilities.  Tasks are of average difficulty and include teaching, instructing, and participating in activities.  Although the employee works under general supervision, the exercise of some initiative and independent judgment is required.  The employee might be required to work varying schedules which include nights and weekends, and to travel to various locations.  Work is reviewed through observation, conferences and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Plans, promotes, and conducts activities; teaches and/or oversees fine arts classes for citizens of all ages and abilities.

Develops and teaches classes in fine arts such as ceramics, metalsmithing, drawing, painting, printmaking, fabric, digital arts. 

Performs clerical work; prepares and submits reports; checks in and puts supplies away; receives monies from class participants and enters information into our tracking system; maintains records, logs, lists, and forms.

Inspects recreational/studio/workshops facilities and equipment to ensure safety; enforces proper safety practices and occupational safety rules and regulations; ensures security of building.

Directs visitors at center/studio; answers phone and provides information concerning programs and use of center/studio/workshop.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of; teaching techniques, materials, care and use of equipment applicable to a wide variety of fine arts, first aid and CPR; basic records keeping.

Skills in; administering first aid and CPR, care/maintenance of equipment, operating power tools and sound and light systems.

Ability to; coordinate/teach and conduct classes and programs in fine arts; maintain records and compile reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, community groups and the public; perform activities requiring moderate physical strength and endurance; work with citizens of all ages and abilities.

Physical Requirements

Mostly sedentary, indoors, requires extended use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school with six (6) months of experience in visual art programs, preferable in an instructional fine art capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a; Standard First Aid Certificate; CPR Certificate within six (6) months of appointment;
A valid driver’s license
