Introduction
This is responsible work involving public relations,
promotional activities, and event coordination.
Nature Of Work
An employee in this class is responsible for developing,
organizing, coordinating, and conducting public information and promotional
activities. Tasks are of more than
average difficulty and include responsibility for establishing favorable
relationships with representatives of area news media and businesses. The employee in this class plans and develops
a city public information program which promotes the Mayor’s goals and
objectives and fosters sound community relations. Under general supervision, employees are
required to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in
determining how, when, and what activities should be pursued to best serve the
interests of the city. Tact, discretion,
and courtesy are extremely important in discharging assigned duties. This position requires weekend work and may
have unpredictable hours. Work is reviewed
through reports submitted, conferences and results achieved. Appointed position; employee serves at the
pleasure of the Mayor.
Examples of Duties
Develop all local media strategy and lead execution; assist
with national media.
Provide written materials and speeches; provides public
relations, marketing and media expertise to the Mayor and the City; lead and
direct development of effective and creative press plus media strategies.
Assists the public and media with requests, problems, and
complaints; provide information concerning programs and activities; research
and respond to complaints or refers for response by appropriate departmental
personnel, providing those personnel with background information.
Serve as a liaison with area news media; conducts and/or
arranges for press briefings; participates in, or arranges for the
participation of personnel in interviews with media representatives to
publicize programs and activities; contact media representatives to encourage
and arrange coverage of special activities; maintain awareness of media
deadlines and ensures that requests for coverage, placements of advertisements,
and provision of information are completed accordingly; write and distribute
press releases; prepare response recommendations for consideration by executive
level personnel whenever unfavorable publicity is received.
Prepare and deliver speeches and presentations to community
groups and organizations; explain programs and activities in order to solicit
support and generate interest.
Maintain records of activities conducted; maintain files of
press releases, news clippings, brochures, and related materials; attend
meetings and confer with city personnel to obtain information concerning
planned activities; arrange for audiovisual support services including
photography and recordings.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of: effective public relations and public
information dissemination principles and techniques; area news media and
business organizations and their methods of operation; photography, printing,
and publication procedures.
Ability to: plan and
conduct effective public relations, informational and promotional activities;
establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees,
representatives of area news media, community organizations and businesses, and
the public; communicate with varied citizen and business groups and speak
effectively in public; write and assimilate materials for publication and
presentation including press releases and other publicity materials.
Suggested Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a
bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, public administration,
political science or a related field and five (5) year’s of experience in
public relations or public administration, including 3 years of supervisory
experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of valid driver’s license is required.
Comments
During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency
declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in
preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
