Investigates or assists in investigation on all fraud related cases.
Investigates various complaints regarding possible code violations; checks to see that persons performing work are properly licensed and have received necessary permits; interviews and obtains statements from both complainants and witnesses concerning violation; informs appropriate parties of violations and corrective action needed.
Assists in conducting background checks on contractors hired to conduct work in a city secure facility.
Files summons for building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and site violations and appears in court as required; performs follow-up research concerning compliance as appropriate, or as directed by court.
Answers public inquiries concerning ordinances and statutes in relation to specific situations; attends meetings of regional, state and local agencies, and organizations to discuss and gather job-related information; conducts and participates in meetings, workshops and seminars; conducts orientations, basic on-the-job and/or specific project training.
Performs damage assessment and habitability inspections of both commercial and residential buildings as part of the City’s emergency response and recovery responsibilities.
Records and photographs detected violations to document for future action; researches files including computer files and other records for needed information; prepares and presents oral reports to present findings, recommendations, etc.; maintains daily/monthly logs.
Orders cease in operations if installations or operations do not conform to applicable codes or if proper licenses and permits are not obtained; issues citations/notices for violations of ordinances in order to achieve compliance.
Takes statements from witnesses and gathers other information in order to prosecute violators; confers with legal staff in order to secure opinions for use in legal proceedings.
Operates lightweight motor vehicle to travel among work locations; performs tasks requiring moderate physical exertion, including climbing ladders, scaffolds, etc.
Operates and maintains portable computer/printer equipment as part of mobile data system; inputs permit, plans and inspection data; utilizes appropriate software.
Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of: general civil and criminal laws, rules and ordinances; state and local licensing laws and regulations; research and investigative procedures, practices, and methods.
Working knowledge of: building construction methods and materials; building codes and ordinances; the layout of the City and its geography; computer equipment and application software packages.
Ability to: learn code compliance inspection procedures; enforce applicable codes and ordinances firmly, tactfully and impartially; read/interpret construction plans and specifications; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials and the general public; operate a lightweight motor vehicle.
