This is responsible work driving heavy trucks and operating moderately complex water production equipment at the solids processing facility.  Bargaining unit position.

An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks of average difficulty involving the safe operation of trucks of three and one half tons and above general vehicle category on public streets and highways. Employees might also be required to operate diverse, moderately complex equipment in support of the departments’ activities. Under immediate supervision, employees are required to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Tasks at times are performed under hazardous conditions and employees are expected to be particularly alert and careful whenever operating the assigned vehicle/equipment. Employees might be required to perform manual and unskilled laboring tasks, using hand and power tools, either separately from or in conjunction with the equipment being operated. Employees might also be required to operate specialty and/or more complex water treatment related equipment on a relief basis or in a training capacity. Time spent working on this site qualifies the employee for the licensure process as a Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator in the State of Florida. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion by observation and through result obtained.

Safely operates a variety of heavy trucks including tandem dump trucks; transports people, materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites; hauls sand, rock, shell, gravel, sludge, and other bulky, heavy items and substances; operates a fifth wheel tractor with trailer in hauling equipment; operates moderately complex equipment, including light crane trucks, forklifts for relocating and placing heavy items and pay-loaders.

Assists in the operation of water treatment equipment at the solids processing facility, including but not limited to: mixing polymer; operating a dump truck; cleaning, adjusting and maintaining solids processing equipment; recording readings; and, working shift work.

Performs minor maintenance and servicing on vehicle/equipment being operated to include checking tire air pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil and fuel, and bleeding brake air tanks where required; visually checks vehicle/equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and the end of the workday; assures that vehicle is properly equipped, serviced and cleaned.

Performs manual and unskilled laboring tasks; uses hand tools and operates power tools either separately from or in conjunction with vehicle/equipment being operated. Operates specialty and more complex vehicles/equipment on a relief basis or in an on-the-job training capacity to acquire experience and develop skill and proficiency.

Operates radio, pagers, cell telephone, etc. to communicate with necessary parties.

Completes periodic time/activity reports to document work.

Performs related work as required.

Working knowledge of: operational and minor maintenance characteristics of heavy trucks and moderately complex equipment; traffic laws, occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Some knowledge of: the use and care of hand and power tools and equipment related to assigned areas; the city and its geography.

Ability to: perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; acquire skill and develop proficiency in the operation of specialty and complex equipment.

Skill and ability to demonstrate proficiency in: the operation of heavy trucks and/or moderately complex water treatment related equipment.

Skill in: the use and care of hand and power tools related to assigned areas.

Completion of high school or possession of a GED and one (1) year of experience in operating lightweight trucks and/or simple motorized equipment, including formal training or six (6) months of experience in operating heavy trucks and/or moderately complex equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid Florida Commercial driver’s license Class "A" with Air Brakes or the ability to obtain one within twelve (12) months.

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
