Introduction

This is responsible work involving sample collection, some field analysis, routine system flushing, and customer contact.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks of average difficulty involving the maintenance of water quality in the distribution system. Under general supervision, the employee is required to work independently in the field and exercise some initiative and independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks. The duties include significant public contact, flushing of water lines, collecting samples and testing for routine field parameters, and responding to customer complaints. Work is reviewed in progress through observation, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Performs routine flushing of distribution system in response to customer concerns and laboratory investigation; provides appropriate documentation of field conditions and assessment of the localized water quality conditions; troubleshoots and identifies sources of customer water quality concerns.

Collects water quality samples in response to customer concerns, monitoring schedules and requirements, and laboratory investigations; documents field collections of water quality samples; logs in samples.

Performs water quality analyses.

Delivers notifications regarding water quality procedures, testing, and related concerns in the distribution system; interacts with customers in the field; maintains up-to-date knowledge regarding water quality concerns.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Extensive knowledge of: practices, methods, tools, and equipment utilized in sample collection; maintenance, operation, and repair of flushing equipment; field water quality monitoring procedures.

Considerable knowledge of: federal, state, and local rules as they apply to distribution system water quality; Tampa Water Department distribution system and service area; occupational hazards, appropriate precautions and methods of promoting safety.

Ability to: operate and maintain flushing and sampling equipment; interpret microfiche and other design plans; locate addresses; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare clear and legible reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Skill in: the operation and maintenance of distribution system equipment; troubleshooting distribution system water quality problems; customer service.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 40-60 lbs., mostly standing and a combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and three (3) years of distribution system experience; OR A College degree from an accredited college of university and one (1) year of distribution system experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
