Introduction

This is professional work involving analytical research and analysis of potable water.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of scientific field and laboratory work in relation to the production of potable water. Assignments are of more than average difficulty and require the exercise of some initiative and independent judgment. The application of sound scientific and technical skills and knowledge is required. Under general supervision, employees receive instructions both orally and in writing. Employees may have limited oversight responsibilities over lower level laboratory staff. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation, conferences, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Prepares samples for water quality analyses; selects and follows appropriate analytical procedures for water quality analyses; analyzes samples for selected water quality parameters with appropriate quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) measures.

Performs selected analyses with proven accuracy and precision; troubleshoots and identifies basic problems with instrumentation and analyses.

Operates and utilizes the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); maintains logs of results, reagents, standards, and instrumentation; maintains appropriate QA/QC records and charts; maintains appropriate supplies; receives and verifies supply orders.

Performs and documents method detection limits and Environmental Protection Agency performance evaluations as necessary.

Plans and prioritizes assigned laboratory work to meet necessary deadlines for analyses and results.

Follows appropriate safety and good laboratory practices.

Responds knowledgeably to inquiries regarding water quality issues.

Provides training on instrumentation; oversees lower level laboratory personnel on an assigned basis.

Operates a lightweight motor vehicle.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: practices, methods, tools, and equipment utilized in laboratory testing analysis of water samples; sampling, testing, and analysis techniques as well as current literature in appropriate areas; equipment, instruments, and procedures used in the chemical and biological analysis of water; water quality monitoring procedures; federal state, and local water quality rules; occupational hazards, appropriate precautions and methods of promoting safety.

Working knowledge of: distribution services area; LIMS.

Ability to: apply scientific and technical knowledge accurately and with professional judgment; complete and interpret scientific tests and examinations; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare clear, legible, accurate reports; operate and maintain laboratory testing and analysis equipment; interpret basic scientific data; troubleshoot equipment and analyses; perform minor adjustments and repairs to laboratory and field equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; operate a lightweight motor vehicle.

Skill in: the operation and maintenance of laboratory testing and analysis equipment; database, word processing and reporting software (for running reports).

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field, and one (1) year laboratory experience in the testing and analysis of water or wastewater samples.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
