Introduction

This is support work in a utilities laboratory.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class of work is responsible for performing support activities in a water or wastewater laboratory. Included are basic office tasks requiring the use of computer software as well as laboratory maintenance tasks such as preparation of sample bottles. Work is of average difficulty and requires the exercise of some initiative and independent judgment in applying specialized knowledge and experience in the interpretation of rules and regulations for the completion of certain assignments. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed through observation while in progress and results obtained upon completion.

Examples of Duties

Performs clerical work in a utilities laboratory; compiles and codes data for input into the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and preparation/generation of reports.

Prepares sample kits; tracks samples using LIMS; maintains sample chain of custody control; properly disposes of samples.

Orders and picks up chemicals; maintains chemical login records.

Prepares lab supplies, chemical solutions and materials for lab use; maintain laboratory supplies inventory in addition to keeping order and cleanliness of the lab; washes sample bottles.

Performs office tasks to include: preparing, editing, storing, and revising letters; answering phones; recording and collecting time cards; ordering and maintaining office supplies; filing; preparing copies; sorting and distributing incoming and outgoing mail; filling in for other office personnel when required.

Establishes, maintains and monitors records files and accounts; invoices clients for outside work performed in the laboratory.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: business English and mathematics; standard office practices, procedures and equipment; operation of computers and software packages. Some knowledge of: rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to laboratory operations; safety practices in a laboratory environment where chemicals are used.

Ability to: understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions; prepare reports; maintain accurate records; learn and perform assigned tasks readily and with accuracy; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform tasks requiring moderate physical exertion to include lifting items weighing forty (40) or more pounds.

Ability and skill in: operations and minor maintenance of office and laboratory machinery and equipment; operating computers accurately and at a prescribed rate of speed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school, preferably with some college level course work in a science related field, and one (1) year of general office or clerical experience with computer skills; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
