Introduction

This is highly responsible supervisory and technical work for the Waste To Energy plant.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class performs responsible supervisory work over the installation, maintenance and repair of waste to energy plant equipment. Duties are varied and require analyzing facts to determine the proper course of action according to standard procedures. Work is not subject to specific checks and controls; but if not detected, errors would cause serious damage to equipment, waste of materials, or financial loss. Employee has both inside and outside contacts to obtain or supply factual information. Work is moderate in nature and performed under conditions typically found in an industrial environment.  Under general supervision, the employee performs duties and assigned tasks in conformance with established procedures requiring the exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgment. Work activities may involve hazardous materials and/or equipment and employees must comply with appropriate safety precautions when dealing with gas system, electrical system, dangerous chemicals, and other similar components and processes within the plant environment. Working extended hours in emergency situations may also be required. Work is reviewed by observation, results attained, and reports submitted.

Examples of Duties

Plans, directs, and coordinates work programs for the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical instrumentation equipment in the waste to energy plant.

Supervises, trains, and evaluates the work performed by subordinate maintenance employees.

Diagnoses the cause of equipment failure from charts, graphs or visual inspection; establishes the priority of repairs for all plant mechanical and electrical instrumentation equipment.

Advises and recommends alterations, extensions, and improvements in processing operations.

Establishes and directs the preventive maintenance and predictive analysis programs.

Prepares and maintains records of costs, inventories and expenditures.

Estimates needs and authorizes work orders and requisitions for materials, tools and equipment.

Follows standard safety procedures, and reports safety and environmental hazards to the shift supervisor; reads, understands, and applies information such as lockout/tagout procedures, safety rules, job hazard analyses, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Operates other equipment throughout the plant including, but not limited to, industrial forklifts, manlifts, and other mobile equipment.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: team dynamics; modern industrial maintenance methods, principles and practices of effective supervision; occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions required in the operation and repair of waste to energy plant equipment.

Knowledge of: operation of pumps, motors, conveyors, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, and similar industrial mechanical equipment; equipment lubrication and maintenance, tools, materials and equipment needed for equipment maintenance and repair.

Ability to: direct and coordinate the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical instrumentation equipment; supervise and evaluate the performance of maintenance personnel; keep work records and prepare reports; exercise individual judgment and take prompt, decisive action when emergency conditions arise; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Skill in: problem solving; basic computer use.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED with 6 years of power plant environment experience to include knowledge of steam generation and a minimum of 4 years of supervisory experience. Bachelor’s degree with course work in mechanical or electrical engineering preferred.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.
