This is responsible supervisory and technical work at the waste to energy plant.
An employee in this class performs responsible supervisory work related to the safe, proper, and efficient operation and maintenance of the waste to energy plant, in accordance with City policies and standards. Under general supervision, the employee performs tasks of average difficulty requiring the exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgment. Duties are varied and require analyzing facts to determine the proper course of action within the limits of standard procedure. Employees will be assigned to shifts on a rotating schedule. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports submitted, and results obtained.
Considerable knowledge of: operation, maintenance and control of steam generating power plants; waste to energy plant lockout/tagout procedures, safety rules and procedures, job hazard analyses, operating and maintenance instructions and manuals; team dynamics; principles and practices of effective supervision; occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions required in the operation and repair of waste to energy plant equipment.
Ability to: detect equipment operating defects and faults; read piping and instrumentation diagrams and schematic drawings; establish and maintain effective working relationships, with both inside and outside contacts; communicate clearly and concisely; follow standard safety procedures; supervise and evaluate the performance of personnel; keep work records and prepare reports; exercise individual judgment and take prompt, decisive action when emergency conditions arise.
Skill in: mathematics; problem solving; basic computer use; performing routine tasks such as opening vessel and equipment access doors, placing and removing furnace access equipment, overhead protection and staging, operating power tools, and performing minor mechanical repairs to plant equipment or structures.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in engineering or physical science and 4 years of solid waste combustion facility, boiler, turbine or related experience with 1 year of supervisor or lead experience; or a high school diploma or GED with 6 years of solid waste combustion facility, boiler, turbine or related experience with 1 year of supervisor or lead experience.
During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
