Introduction

This is responsible communications work for the Solid Waste and Environmental Programs Department.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

The employee is this class of work performs tasks of more than average difficulty involving work orders for vehicle maintenance repairs, general customer service complaints, responding to utilities services requests, and dispatching information to emergency and non-emergency personnel. Under general supervision, the employee participates in assignments requiring considerable contact with department personnel and the general public. The exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgment as well as tact and courtesy are required in completing assignments in accordance with established guidelines. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Answers inquiries by telephone and in person regarding work orders for vehicle maintenance repairs, radio installation appointments, delivery of goods and services, and utilities services.

Maintains service status of all mobile radio units; dispatches units by radio through the use of code signals; dispatches appropriate personnel to accidents and incidents.

May approve vehicle maintenance work orders for shop repairs.

Maintains division complaint records and prepares reports as required; records, files and stores vehicle maintenance logs, reports and other related documents; assists with updating vehicle and two-way radio inventories.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of : the rules, regulations, procedures, and functions of utility services; dispatcher functions.

Working knowledge of: appropriate municipal codes, ordinances and resolutions; departmental policies and procedures.

Some knowledge of: the City layout and geographical area.

Ability to: react quickly, calmly and rationally in emergencies; perform basic mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy; understand and follow complex oral and/or written instructions; operate radio dispatching equipment; speak clearly and communicate effectively with all personnel and the general public; explain the operation to others when required; establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, other employees and vendors.

Skill in: the use of two-way radio communication equipment.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and one (1) year of experience in the field of solid waste collection and disposal preferably including six (6) months of experience in customer service; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license might be required. 

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
