The employee in this class is responsible for coordinating and supervising the assignment of public works vehicles and off-road equipment pertinent to the maintenance and repair of municipal streets and storm drainage systems. The employee will also supervise the maintenance of yard operations and security. Work is of more than average difficulty and involves assuring the availability of a sufficient number and type of vehicles and equipment, and checking daily to ascertain operating conditions. Under general supervision, the employee must exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in performing assigned tasks to include providing assistance in verifying cases of vehicle and equipment abuse and/or neglect by operators or others. Work is reviewed through conferences, observation, reports submitted, and results obtained.
Working knowledge of: the operation and care of vehicles and equipment utilized in the public works area; equipment scheduling techniques and procedures; the construction, assembly and maintenance requirements of diversified construction vehicles and equipment.
Some knowledge of: equipment and vehicle records keeping and report writing; specifications and technical characteristics of construction and related vehicles and equipment; occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions; effective supervisory techniques.
Ability to: conduct basic vehicle and equipment inspections for malfunctions; plan, assign, and review the work of employees ; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; follow oral and written instructions, and prepare and submit clear, accurate and complete reports orally and in writing; operate a variety of heavy maintenance vehicles and equipment.
Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance or repair of a variety of heavy maintenance vehicles and equipment, with six (6) months in supervisory experience.
Possession of a valid Florida Commercial driver’s license, Class "A", with Tanker and HazMat endorsements.
