Introduction

This is supervisory work involving custodial services.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising and participating in custodial tasks to maintain cleanliness of municipal buildings, parks and recreation facilities and adjacent areas.  Tasks are of routine difficulty and are learned through on-the-job training.  The position will require an employee to be responsible for the safekeeping and proper use of keys to municipal buildings and facilities.   Under general supervision, the employee is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in supervising and participating in the performance of assigned tasks which are accomplished in accordance with safety and established procedures.  Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through conferences, observations, audits and reports submitted.

Examples of Duties

Plans, assigns, supervises, reviews and participates in custodial tasks including mopping, dusting, waxing, picking up litter, and emptying waste receptacles; washes windows, glass doors and mirrors, walls and wood work; vacuums floors and carpeting; polishes metal; cleans and provides supplies for restroom and lounges; replaces light bulbs. 

Performs routine scheduled inspections of contractual custodial services, ensuring compliance with approved cleaning specifications, departmental regulations and safety requirements and reports deficiencies or non-compliance to supervisor.

Performs grounds keeping adjacent to buildings to include cleaning walkways, emptying outside waste receptacles. Insures security of buildings or facilities as required to include locking and unlocking doors and checking to see that no one is left in the buildings at night.

Knowledge of cleaning supplies, products, equipment and related safety procedures.

Maintains logs, records and prepares related reports.

Assists administrative staff when needed; participates with special events if needed.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working Knowledge of:  the City and its geography.  

Some knowledge of:  basic mathematics; effective supervisory techniques.  

Ability to: supervise, plan, organize, and evaluate subordinate performance and initiate corrective action as needed; perform computer functions; communicate effectively and courteously with the general public when required; plan, assign, supervise, and review the work of subordinate employees; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, municipal officials; maintain records and prepare reports; lift, carry and move supplies and equipment, train subordinate employees in the performance of assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent and one (1) year of experience performing custodial duties, preferably with six (6) months lead or supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
