Plans, assigns, schedules, supervises, and reviews the work of subordinate personnel in the TFR occupational health program unit; recommends such actions as employment, transfer, and separation; completes performance evaluations; administers training and necessary discipline; monitors work in progress and evaluates results achieved; provides advice and assistance to subordinates.
Tracks injury/illness trends in the department and evaluates causes; recommends methods to reduce injury/illnesses; develops and submits plans, policies, and procedures relating to new programs and initiatives in the health care and safety field.
Coordinates TFR drug-free workplace program; manages department's medical surveillance programs (HazMat Technician Surveillance, Infectious Disease Exposure, Respirator Use); coordinates scheduling of physicals such as HazMat; coordinates blood drives; assists with accident investigations.
Develops preventive health programs (health and wellness) and various employee education materials, including flyers, videos and information packets; presents training programs on health and safety issues, including nutritional counseling; produces and hosts occupational health and safety programs for city cable television airing; provides counseling to employees on health and safety; supervises subordinates in the provision of health and fitness counseling to employees; conducts periodic health and safety surveys.
Responds to major incidents where firefighters may require on-site medical assistance; provides advice and assistance to fire management on health and safety concerns associated with the incidents; supervises and administers needed medical assistance; provides personal medical care and administers on-site first aid and medical triage; observes, assesses and records symptoms; accompanies personnel to hospitals to facilitate their diagnosis and receipt of appropriate medical care.
Manages TFR's worker's compensation and disability case management process, including forms management and communication with insurer (third party administrator); manages the process of work-related medical cases to expedite timely return to work and reduction of lost time; coordinates light duty, including communication with worker's compensation carriers, off-site physicians and care providers; maintains immunization records and provides immunizations to employees.
Supervises the maintenance of medical records and their confidentiality consistent with such requirements as HIPAA; manages injury and illness record keeping including the OSHA log and employee medical file.
Works with the TPD in workers’ compensation case management; coordinates infectious disease control program for the police department; acts as liaison to police department regarding health and wellness issues. May act as liaison to other departments regarding health and wellness issues.

Considerable knowledge of: nursing techniques; medical administration processes; general injury and illness pathophysiology and standard treatment; medical (injury and illness) records keeping, including forms management; medical reference resources; preventive health care (health and wellness programs).
Working knowledge: effective supervisory techniques; state and federal worker's compensation and disability laws; OSHA laws; drug-free workplace practices; medical surveillance programs (HazMat, Infectious Disease, Respirator Use); nutrition.
