Coordinates with the local community and neighborhood civic organizations to promote an atmosphere of community responsibility, awareness and cooperation. Provides assistance for the police department's youth programs.
Oversees projects which are aimed at reducing crime and drug abuse by encompassing various strategies such as prevention, intervention, treatment and neighborhood revitalization.
Assists with developing public relations and outreach campaigns to foster positive police community relations; seeks to encourage civic, educational, financial, social services, governmental and other agencies to participate in various programming initiatives through the provision of specific services; improves public awareness of services and programs through such activities as the preparation and distribution of informational handouts, mailers, and newsletters.
Seeks methods to bring forth issues, concerns and feedback from the community that can lead to the development of programs, services, activities and projects to effect a positive movement of the community-based quality of life; ensures activities are within established policy and budgeting framework.
Seeks out funding opportunities and/or writes or assists in the preparation of grant applications; assures that funds are disbursed and recorded in accordance with program guidelines.
Attends and participates in meetings, conferences, etc.; coordinates training programs as needed.
Performs related work as required.
Working knowledge of: organization, operation and processes of the criminal justice system, including law enforcement, courts and corrections; social issues confronting communities, (crime, poverty, disrupted families, substance abuse, etc.); operation and use of personal computers and related software; research methods, principles and practices; standard office practices, procedures and equipment.
Ability to: follow oral and written instructions, assimilate information, interpret written and numerical data; locate, organize and analyze data; accomplish independent research and study for completion of projects; prepare and edit clear and concise written reports; establish and maintain positive rapport with varied groups of civic, educational, and social organizations and with individual citizens; communicate effectively with individuals and organizational groups, including the media; maintain records.
