Supervises and directs division and district chiefs in the management of fire suppression and rescue activities; plans, directs, and coordinates fire suppression activities, emergency medical responses, advanced life support transportation, technical rescue, and hazardous materials responses within the city including the operation of multiple fire stations strategically located throughout the city, the usage of specialized fire suppression and rescue apparatus, and the deployment and utilization of trained personnel.
Plans, directs, and coordinates specialized marine fire fighting in the industrialized port area, shipping channel and waters of Tampa Bay; plans and coordinates fire suppression and rescue operations at Tampa International Airport; analyzes programs and resources; directs implementation of necessary changes to ensure operational readiness.
Participates in developing, establishing, and reviewing the departmental mission, annual goals and objectives; participates in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures, deployment strategies, standards of conduct, incident management procedures, and tactical operations.
Prepares reports and correspondence; assigns, develops, and evaluates staff; manages unit budget and work processes.
Performs related work as required.
Extensive knowledge of: principles and practices of modern firefighting, fire administration, organization and programs, and fire apparatus and equipment, including rescue, EMS, fire prevention, and training; federal and state laws and regulations relating to job duties; modern management practices and procedures; modern developments, current literature, and sources of information relating to the fire service.
Considerable knowledge of: emergency medical services, fire prevention, and fire training.
Working knowledge of: labor relations, including negotiations, contract administration, and grievance processing; application of data processing to fire administration and activities.
Ability to: write and speak clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings; plan, assign, direct, and coordinate the work of fire service employees in a manner that promotes full performance; establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, directors, managers and other employees, labor union representatives, the media, and the general public; deal with public relations problems effectively, courteously and tactfully; plan, organize, and refine procedures; blend people into teams when needed and foster open dialogue and participation; set clear objectives and measures and monitor process, progress and results.
