The internship experience in the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation department is reserved for qualified individuals working towards a degree (Master’s or Bachelor’s) in sports and recreation management, parks and recreation management, business management, education, public administration or a related field of study. The City of Tampa provides a great experience for students to gain the necessary applied knowledge and experiences that will lend to a successful career!
Nature Of Work
Internships are intended to complement the student’s academic program so the intern must bring foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in the assigned department’s mission and operations, and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities, clear direction regarding expectations and feedback concerning their performance. Interns will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the Parks and Recreation department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.
Examples of Duties
- Gain knowledge and practical experience working in a local government parks and recreation office under professional supervision.
- Develop skills working with people and the public in an office and public environment by learning daily operations and building customer service skills.
- Develop an understanding of the working relationship between the department and its community volunteers, seasonal staff and instructors, part-time staff, and contracted service providers.
- Acquire information and understanding related to recreation facility operations and scheduling.
- Observe and practice a variety of administrative tasks such as providing the community with requested information, processing program registrations and payments, processing facility and park usage requests, marketing program and event information, implementing department organization of paperwork and information, and analyzing finances.
- Work with community sports organizations to disseminate information to the public and administrate operations.
- Establish and maintain relations with local organizations and groups to promote community recreation activities and events.
- Address program and community concerns while expanding problem solving skills, attention to detail, resourcefulness, and sound judgment with professional guidance.
- Expand written and verbal communication skills necessary for a professional workplace.
- Establish goals for professional development.
Minimum Qualifications
The candidate must be currently enrolled in an academic program and earning credits toward a degree. The candidate must be self-motivated and committed to the profession. Applicants must have excellent interpersonal, written and computer skills, preferably with Microsoft Office Software Programs.
Licenses or Certifications
Certification in First-Aid/CPR/AED is preferred.
Examination
Evaluation of education and experience.
Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
