Crime Analyst I

This is work involving analysis of crime data.  Bargaining unit position.

An employee in this class is responsible for performing analysis of police department crime data to identify patterns, trends, common characteristics, and the underlying causes of criminal activity. When assigned as a property specialist, works with pawn shops or secondhand dealers to ensure compliance with state law. The employee works under general supervision, assisting a superior in developing appropriate programs leading to improved crime prevention and criminal apprehension based on information obtained and analyzed. Work involves assisting in developing effective methods for selection, assembly and organization of significant data to permit analysis, reporting of conclusions and recommendation of appropriate solutions. The employee is expected to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in performing assigned tasks within established policies, guidelines, and procedures. Work is of average difficulty and requires that the employee have some previous knowledge of data gathering and analysis methods and techniques. Work is reviewed through conferences, review and analysis of reports, and recommendations submitted.

Maintains files on criminals’ modus operandi (MO); maintains support and other files; organizes data for analysis.

Identifies stolen property through investigative analysis.

Utilizes various databases to gather and disseminate information. 

Assists as necessary in: developing methods for correlation of data and determination of patterns, trends, or common characteristics relating to crime within the municipality; developing conclusions and recommendations for improvement or correction of specific or related crime problems; gathering of information; performing regular or specific research analyses of crimes, social, and economic data; maintaining significant characteristics abstracts of past and current crime patterns and trends within the city; providing operating and staff units with information concerning current and past investigations; implementing improvements within the crime analysis unit and in coordination with other units.

When assigned as a property specialist, may visit pawn shops and secondhand dealers to search for stolen property. 

Prepares and submits daily reports.

Performs related work as required.

Working knowledge of: statistical methods and research concepts and techniques.

Some knowledge of: computer techniques, statistical application, and capabilities.

Ability to: develop a working knowledge of the principles of, and developments in, crime analysis methods, techniques, and data sources; gather and organize data for analysis; interpret and analyze crime and other data; prepare and present clear and concise reports and recommendation both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree with course work in the social sciences (criminology, criminal justice, sociology, political science, or related field) or in the technical sciences (statistics, mathematics, computer science, or related field) and six (6) months statistical or research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid drivers license may be required.

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
