Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing lifeguarding tasks and enforcing safety rules at a municipal swimming facility. Tasks are of routine difficulty and include participation in maintaining an assigned area in a safe condition. The exercise of some initiative and independent judgement is required when responding to emergency situations which might arise. These employees work under general supervision, ensuring that proper observation techniques and safety of patrons at swimming areas are maintained at all times. Employees might be required to work irregular hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Lifeguard position is currently up to 15 hours per week.  Work is reviewed through observation, periodic conferences and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Patrols entire pool area and locker rooms, maintaining a constant watch for potential accidents in the water, on diving boards, pool decks, and surrounding areas. Enforces policies, rules, and regulations governing conduct of the pool patrons; Assists higher level aquatics(s) leader at a pool facility; participates in the enforcement of swimming pool rules and regulations. Participates in the maintenance of areas, equipment and supplies; when assigned to a pool performs such pool maintenance as brushing, vacuuming; informs supervisor of need to restock supplies in order to maintain correct supply levels. Performs special assignments such as assisting with swim meets and other aquatics activities. Completes attendance reports, daily reports , accident reports, and special activity sheets as required. Answers phones and provides information regarding program and facility. Performs all lifeguard duties when needed; administers first aid and  performs lifesaving activities; responds to emergencies. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: lifesaving principles and practices; water safety techniques and the use of lifesaving equipment; first aid procedures.

Some knowledge of: pool rules and regulations.

Ability to: perform lifeguard skills as required, enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; prevent hazardous situations from developing; react quickly, calmly and rationally in emergencies; maintain records and compile reports when needed; communicate and interact effectively with the general public; perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance.

Skills in: the operation and maintenance of lifesaving equipment; lifesaving procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years of age and possess current Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid certifications.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of: current nationally certified First Aid and Lifeguarding Certificates; CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certificate; a valid Florida driver's license is preferred.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
